I'm a draftsman and engineer by trade - the photo below (from which I based my painting) is analyzed and dimensioned.
This method allows me to translate the photo to canvas, at any scale, and without distortion. As you can see, I also used it for some color matching.
Have to be carful with photos as the exposure greatly affects the color and lighting (obviously).

For paintings like this, I use canvas panel (canvas board) rather than stretched canvas, because it allows me to do my precision drafting,
and my sharp pencils and instruments won't make any holes.
